Mennonite Life

Horse Sale

Today was the monthly horse sale. All the area Mennonites and Amish head to the sale to purchase their horses. Horses provide the transportation both on the road and in the fields. Wondering around the sale watching and chatting I seen a young man all dressed up. Talked to a young Mennonite man i know and he told me what was going on.

The well dressed man was in the process of inviting people to his wedding. So I inquired more a Mennonite wedding is a little different than ours. On a Sunday your wedding is announced at church. The following week you go around your community inviting your guests and in this case the couple is being married this Wednesday. Little different time frame than i'm used to seeing.

St Jacobs Area

I went on a journey to the farmers market today, I had to stop my a local wood working shop to get a new leaf made for our table which is a family heirloom. The shop was operated be a Amish family. Heading to the shop I came across an Amish farmer planting his field with soybeans. His equipment was a team of 3 horses and an older planter. I was able to have a brief chat with this farmer while he was reloading the planter. The field was 42 acres and it was now the second day planting his crop. I learned a little more about their culture which I have been very interested in since I was a kid.
